President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to officially break ground for the Hoima City Stadium today, Wednesday, March 19, marking a major milestone in Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The ceremony is part of the head of state’s four-day Parish Development Model (PDM) tour in the Bunyoro sub-region, which began on Tuesday.
Hoima City Stadium is one of the three venues the country plans to use for AFCON 2027, which it will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.
The state-of-the-art facility is being constructed by Turkish firm Summa International Construction Company, with work having commenced in August 2024.
According to the contractors, construction is progressing smoothly, with the main structure now over 50% complete. Roofing is expected to begin in April, and completion is projected before the end of 2025.
Once finalised, the stadium will boast a 20,000-seater capacity, a 2,000-capacity indoor arena, a running track, training facilities, a swimming pool, and outdoor courts for netball and volleyball.
The entire project, valued at USD 129 million, is being built on a 34.9-acre site in Hoima City, and will benefit over 500,000 residents and sports enthusiasts in the region.
Following the ground breaking ceremony, President Museveni will hold a media interaction in Masindi at 5 PM.
His visit to the Bunyoro sub-region marks his 14th PDM tour, covering districts including Kagadi, Kikuube, Kakumiro, Masindi, Buliisa, Kiryandongo, and Hoima.
With the rapid progress of construction, Hoima City Stadium is on track to be a key venue for AFCON 2027, strengthening Uganda’s football infrastructure and positioning the country as a serious player in hosting major continental events.
