FUBA Drops A1 Challenge from NBL Over Alleged Fraud

A1 Challenge, one of Uganda’s oldest women’s basketball clubs, has been withdrawn from the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations National Basketball League following a dispute over player registration and alleged forgery of documents.

According to an official statement released by FUBA, A1 Challenge had requested a 10-day extension to register additional players and a postponement of their fixtures.

However, the FUBA Competitions Council rejected the request, citing regulations that prohibit extensions beyond the official registration deadline without valid justification.

The controversy escalated when A1 Challenge claimed to have signed three new players, but their registration was questioned.

Upon investigation, the Competitions Council found that the signatures on the submitted contracts had been forged. A1 Challenge was unable to provide sufficient proof to refute the findings.

As a result, the Competitions Council ruled that the club had violated competition regulations, specifically the code of conduct on fraud, impersonation, and the presentation of forged documents.

Under Article VII, section 7.02(a)(I) of the 2025 competition rules, teams found guilty of such offenses face suspension from all FUBA competitions for the remainder of the season. Clubs may also face demotion to a lower division.

This development marks a significant setback for A1 Challenge, which finished ninth in the National Basketball League (NBL) women’s division last season, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot.

The club had been hoping to rebuild and strengthen its squad ahead of the new campaign.

Despite the ruling, A1 Challenge retains the right to appeal the decision through the FUBA Arbitration Tribunal.

The club has yet to make an official statement regarding whether it intends to challenge the ruling.
