The Turkish Cup derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce descended into chaos on Wednesday night as tensions between managers Jose Mourinho and Okan Buruk boiled over.
Galatasaray emerged victorious with a 2-1 win, but the post-match drama overshadowed the result.
Fenerbahce accused Galatasaray boss Buruk of provoking Mourinho with “disrespectful hand gestures,” leading to a heated confrontation where Mourinho allegedly “briefly touched his nose.”
Buruk dramatically fell to the ground, prompting Fenerbahce to issue a strongly-worded statement, claiming Buruk “acted as if he had been shot” and calling his behavior “a characteristic attitude.”
The incident occurred at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium after the final whistle, with both managers interacting with match officials. Buruk downplayed the altercation in his post-match press conference, stating there was “nothing” between him and Mourinho.
However, Galatasaray escalated the feud by posting a mocking video of Mourinho on X, styled after the US comedy South Park.
The fiery derby also saw red cards issued to substitutes from both sides during stoppage time, adding to the animosity. Fenerbahce’s Mert Yandas and Galatasaray’s Kerem Demirbay and Baris Yilmaz were sent off following a melee between the benches.
This clash follows a history of tension between the two clubs. In February, Galatasaray accused Mourinho of making “racist statements” during a goalless Super Lig draw, leading to a four-game ban and a fine of £35,194 for the Portuguese manager.
Mourinho responded by launching a lawsuit against Galatasaray, citing an “attack on his personal rights.”
