Ruben Amorim Defends Andre Onana Amid Criticism Following Europa League Draw

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has stood by his goalkeeper Andre Onana, despite the Cameroonian’s mistakes leading to both Lyon goals in a 2-2 Europa League draw on Thursday.

The match came just a day after former United player Nemanja Matic labeled Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers” in the club’s history.

Onana, who has made eight errors leading to goals since the start of last season—the most of any Premier League goalkeeper—found himself at the center of criticism.

However, Amorim shifted the focus to his own shortcomings as manager. “If you look at the season, I’ve made more mistakes than them during these last games and during these last months,” said Amorim, who was appointed in November.

Amorim emphasized the importance of handling Onana’s situation naturally, expressing confidence in the goalkeeper.

“There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him,” he added. “The most important thing is to be natural, and then when the time comes, I will choose the best XI to play.”

Currently sitting 13th in the Premier League, Manchester United’s best chance of European football next season lies in winning the Europa League.

The team will host Lyon for the second leg at Old Trafford next Thursday, aiming to secure their place in the next round.

When asked if he retained faith in Onana, Amorim reaffirmed his commitment to focusing on training and tactical adjustments.

“We continue to do the same thing—training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best eleven to win every match,” he told TNT Sports.
