Seventeen-year-old sprinting prodigy Gout Gout electrified Perth’s athletics crowd by clinching the Australian 200m title and shattering the 20-second barrier with a breathtaking time of 19.84 seconds.
Although the feat was wind-assisted, with a tailwind of +2.2 meters per second exceeding the legal limit, the performance underlined Gout’s meteoric rise in track and field.
Gout’s explosive run makes him the second-fastest under-20 200m sprinter in history under all conditions, trailing only American Erriyon Knighton’s extraordinary 19.49 at the LSU Invitational in 2022.
Reflecting on his success, Gout said, “Top speed is my gift. I used it, took off, and I got sub-20, so I couldn’t be happier.” He had already demonstrated his immense talent earlier in the heats with a legal 20.21, solidifying his reputation as a future star of the sport.
Gout’s performance wasn’t limited to the 200m glory. On Friday, he stormed to victory in the Under-20 100m title with a dazzling 9.99 seconds, though it too fell afoul of the wind regulations.
His focus on refining his first 100 meters paid dividends, as he continues to chase his goal of a legal sub-10 time.
