The fourth edition of the National Athletics Trials went ahead on Saturday, overcoming a heavy downpour that briefly disrupted the day’s programme but failed to dampen the athletes’ competitive spirit.
Broadcast live on NBS Sport, the event saw determined athletes battling for qualifying times to secure spots at upcoming global competitions, including the World Championships.
Despite the challenging weather, the competition resumed quickly after a brief delay, with athletes displaying focus and resilience on the wet track.
“These trials are everything for us,” said sprinter Fred Masesa, who has participated in all four trials this season. “Even with the rain, we had to come out and perform. There’s too much at stake.”
Event organisers noted the weather’s impact but praised the athletes and officials for staying on course.
“The weather tested our contingency plans, but our team handled it well,” said Abdallah Muhammad, publicity secretary for the organising committee. “Most importantly, the athletes got their chance to compete and post qualifying times.”
With more trial events ahead, results from this weekend will play a key role in shaping the final national team selections.
