Renowned boxing promoter Bob Arum has expressed his skepticism about Tyson Fury making a return to the ring following the heavyweight’s decision to retire in January.
The 36-year-old Briton’s announcement came shortly after back-to-back losses to Oleksandr Usyk, the reigning WBA (Super), WBC, and WBO champion.
Fury, known for his dramatic career comebacks, has retired before, but Arum believes this time the decision will stick. “If I was a betting man, I would say he will never fight again,” Arum shared on the 5 Live Boxing podcast.
Citing Marvin Hagler’s famous remark about motivation and wealth, Arum added, “Tyson, really, I don’t think wants to get up in the morning and do road work when economically he doesn’t have to.”
Fury’s last three fights took place in Saudi Arabia, with his most recent UK appearance coming in 2022, where he dominated Derek Chisora at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
His professional record stands at 34 wins, one draw, and two defeats—the latter inflicted by Usyk, who ended Fury’s 15-year unbeaten streak last May and secured a rematch victory in December.
Despite Fury’s retirement announcement, speculation about his return has persisted. Videos of him working out in his personal gym have fueled rumors, while rivals like Anthony Joshua remain open to a potential showdown.
Promoter Eddie Hearn suggested that the much-anticipated Fury-Joshua bout could still happen if the “Gypsy King” reaches out.
