Teen sensation Mirra Andreeva’s impressive form took a hit at the Stuttgart Open, as the sixth seed was defeated in straight sets by Ekaterina Alexandrova in the last 16.
Andreeva, 17, who has already claimed two titles this season—including a historic win at the Dubai Tennis Championships—was unable to counter Alexandrova’s dominance, falling 6-3 6-2 in just over an hour.
Alexandrova, unseeded in the tournament, secured her fourth victory against a top-10 opponent this season. She now advances to face American third seed Jessica Pegula, who cruised past Poland’s Magdalena Frech with a commanding 6-1 6-1 win.
Meanwhile, Italian fifth seed Jasmine Paolini reached the quarter-finals for the second year in a row, defeating Germany’s Jule Niemeier 6-1 7-5. Paolini awaits the winner of Thursday’s match between fourth seed Coco Gauff and German talent Ella Seidel.
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka is set to take on Belgian Elise Mertens in the next round after Anastasia Potapova was forced to withdraw due to injury.
The final quarter-final pairing will be determined later, as Polish second seed Iga Swiatek faces either American seventh seed Emma Navarro or Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko.
