Villa Thrash Newcastle to Bolster Champions League Ambitions

Aston Villa delivered a masterclass performance at Villa Park, dismantling Newcastle United 4-1 in a decisive display that tightens the race for a top-five Premier League finish and Champions League qualification.

Ollie Watkins was at the heart of Villa’s victory, making history and setting the tone for an unforgettable encounter.

Watkins struck within just 33 seconds, becoming Villa’s joint-top Premier League goalscorer alongside Gabriel Agbonlahor with his 74th goal, aided by a deflection off Fabian Schar.

Newcastle equalized in the 18th minute, as Schar turned Harvey Barnes’ precise cross into a well-placed header through Emiliano Martinez’s legs.

The second half belonged to Villa, with Watkins turning provider in the 64th minute by setting up full-back Ian Maatsen for a composed dink to restore the lead.

Jacob Ramsey added Villa’s third in the 73rd minute, as his cross bounced off Dan Burn into the net. Substitute Amadou Onana sealed the triumph moments later with a sensational long-range strike into the top corner.

The emphatic win propels Villa to sixth place in the Premier League table, now level on points with fifth-placed Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle remain third but find their cushion narrowed to just two points over the in-form Villa, with five matches remaining.
