Ostapenko Stuns Sabalenka to Claim Stuttgart Open Title

Jelena Ostapenko delivered a commanding performance to defeat world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-1, and clinch the Stuttgart Open title.

The Latvian, who had lost all three previous encounters against Sabalenka, was in dominant form, breaking her opponent’s serve in the opening game and maintaining relentless pressure throughout the match.

Sabalenka, uncharacteristically error-prone, found herself broken three times in the second set as Ostapenko reeled off five consecutive games to seal a decisive victory.

Reflecting on her triumph, Ostapenko expressed her joy and acknowledged her opponent, saying, “It is great to share the court with you, you are such a great champion.”

This victory marks Ostapenko’s ninth WTA title and her first on clay since her remarkable French Open triumph in 2017.

Her path to the title included a significant quarter-final victory over world number two Iga Swiatek, showcasing her impressive form on the Stuttgart clay.

For Sabalenka, this was her fourth Stuttgart Open final and another heartbreak, having previously lost to Ash Barty in 2021 and Iga Swiatek in 2022 and 2023.

Despite the loss, Sabalenka graciously congratulated Ostapenko, remarking, “You were a better player than me today and that’s it.”
