Full Groups Revealed as Gazelles Plot AfroBasket Campaign

Uganda has been drawn into Group C of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, where they will face continental giants Senegal and fellow qualifier Guinea.

The biennial tournament is scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 3 at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan.

Uganda booked its place at this year’s AfroBasket by winning the FIBA Women’s Zone V Qualifiers in August 2024.

The Gazelles, led by head coach Nicholas Natuhereza and captain Jane Asinde, stunned hosts and defending zone champions Egypt with a 74-63 win in the final.

It was a sweet moment of redemption, having lost to Egypt in the 2023 final. Asinde was named tournament MVP after a standout performance in the title match.

At the main tournament, Uganda will now test its progress against Senegal—winners of a record 11 AfroBasket titles—and Guinea, who return to the competition after finishing among the top teams in their regional qualifiers.

The tournament will feature 12 teams, split into four groups of three. Group winners will advance directly to the quarter-finals, while the second and third-placed teams will play a qualification round to complete the last eight.

Group A features hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, and Angola. Côte d’Ivoire will look to capitalize on home support in their first time hosting the tournament in Abidjan, while Egypt enters as a wildcard.

Group B includes Mali, Cameroon, and South Sudan. Mali, the 2021 runners-up, are considered strong contenders, with Cameroon and South Sudan both aiming to break through to the knockout stage.

Group D is headlined by defending champions Nigeria, who are grouped with Mozambique and Rwanda. Nigeria will be looking to continue their dominance after winning the last three editions of the Women’s AfroBasket.

The draw was held at the Hotel des Armées in Abidjan and officiated by FIBA Africa officials including President Anibal Manave and Regional Director Alphonse Bilé.
