British number one Katie Boulter was knocked out of the Madrid Open second round by Italian sixth seed Jasmine Paolini, who won 6-1, 6-2 in 61 minutes.
Paolini converted six of seven break points. Boulter, who had her first WTA clay win in round one, struggled on serve.
Emma Raducanu and Sonay Kartal are the remaining Britons in the event.
Meanwhile, Spain’s Paula Badosa withdrew with a back injury before her second-round match.
