Uganda’s distance running star Jacob Kiplimo delivered a stunning marathon debut, finishing second at the 2025 London Marathon with a national record-breaking time of 2:03:37.
Speaking after the race, the 24-year-old — already a global force in half marathon and cross country running — reflected on the demands of stepping up from 21km to the full 42km.
“The marathon is a completely different challenge,” Kiplimo said. “For the half marathon, I didn’t need heavy mileage, but for this distance, I had to put in serious long runs.
“I’m grateful for the result, and now it’s about learning, adapting, and preparing for what’s ahead.”

Kiplimo shattered the previous Ugandan marathon record of 2:04:48, set by Stephen Kissa at the 2022 Hamburg Marathon, announcing himself as a major contender on the global marathon scene.
The race was won by Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe, who crossed the line in 2:02:27. Kiplimo, aware of Sawe’s early move, shifted his focus to securing second place.

“Sabastian was too strong today. Once he made the break, I focused on running my own race and making sure I finished strong,” Kiplimo noted.
Uganda also celebrated a strong showing in the women’s field, with Stella Chesang clocking 2:22:42 to finish sixth in a competitive race won by Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa (2:16:23).
Kiplimo’s impressive debut hints at even greater things to come as he transitions fully into marathon running, with the eyes now set firmly on future global majors and championships.
