Germany’s sporting director Rudi Voeller has publicly rebuked Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger for his sending-off in the Copa del Rey final loss to Barcelona.
Rüdiger was red-carded for throwing an object at the referee.
Voeller told SID that Rüdiger’s behavior was unacceptable for a German international, despite acknowledging his passion.
“He has to change that and he knows it himself,” Voeller stated, referencing Rüdiger’s apology for the incident.
The defender also spoke with Voeller and coach Julian Nagelsmann.
While former players like Lothar Matthaeus called for a significant suspension, others like Jens Lehmann cautioned against stifling Rüdiger’s competitive spirit.
Rüdiger faces a potential ban in Spain, but the DFB is reportedly not planning separate action ahead of Germany’s Nations League finals in June.
