Defending champion Iga Swiatek reached the Madrid Open quarter-finals after a 6-0, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 victory over Diana Shnaider on Tuesday.
The match followed a day of disruption caused by a nationwide blackout at the Caja Magica.
Swiatek saved 11 of 13 break points in the two-hour 34-minute encounter.
Reflecting on the power outage, she admitted enjoying the “relaxed” atmosphere and digital detox. She now faces Madison Keys or Donna Vekic.
On the men’s side, Alex de Minaur beat Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 7-6 (7/3), tying Carlos Alcaraz for the most tour wins this season (24). He also noted the unusual experience of the blackout.
Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe also advanced, overcoming Karen Khachanov and Alexandre Muller respectively.
Tiafoe will now play Novak Djokovic’s conqueror, Matteo Arnaldi.
