The National Basketball League returns on Wednesday with the spotlight firmly on Lugogo Indoor Arena, where reigning women’s champions JKL Lady Dolphins are in a highly anticipated clash against Angels at 7 pm.
The game, which will be broadcast live on AfroMobile, is expected to serve as a statement of intent for both sides.
JKL Lady Dolphins enter the contest riding a wave of confidence after an impressive international showing at the 2025 Genocide Memorial Tournament in Kigali, Rwanda.
The four-time WNBL champions, representing Uganda, came heartbreakingly close to glory, narrowly losing 61-65 in the final to Rwanda Energy Group (REG) to secure silver.
Despite the loss, their performance in Kigali cemented their status as a continental powerhouse and gave fans a glimpse of the depth and quality in the squad.
Before their Kigali campaign, JKL had dispatched UPDF Lady Tomahawks with ruthless efficiency, registering a staggering 102-63 win.
It was a game that underlined the gulf in class between the defending champions and much of the field.
Leading that effort were a host of standouts including Hope Akello, who put up a monster double-double (13 points, 17 rebounds) alongside 4 assists and 3 steals.
Zainah Lokwameri was equally lethal with 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Shadia Nassanga, Evelyn Nakiyingi, and Ritah Imanishimwe all posted significant numbers in a team performance that left the Tomahawks shell-shocked.
Now, back on home soil, JKL will look to channel that form into their local title defence and extend their dominance in the league.
With a lineup brimming with national team talent and seasoned performers, thw side will be favourites to overpower the Angels.
But the Angels are not just showing up to make up the numbers.
Last time out, they were handed a walkover win over UCU Lady Canons before being brought back down to earth by a 51-58 defeat to Miracle Eaglets.
That loss exposed some frailties, especially in the final quarter where decision-making proved costly.
However, with time to regroup, the Angels are expected to bring a renewed focus and intensity to the court in hopes of pulling off one of the season’s biggest upsets.
With JKL looking to re-establish their league dominance and Angels eager to bounce back, tonight’s clash promises high stakes and high-quality basketball.
Fans can catch all the action either at Lugogo, or on the AfroMobile.
