Uganda Tennis Open Expands with New Inclusive Categories in Historic 2025 Edition

The 2025 Uganda Open Tennis Tournament is set to break new ground with the introduction of wheelchair tennis, juniors, and veterans categories in a bold move aimed at promoting inclusivity and broadening participation in the sport.

The tournament, which will run from May 10 to 24, will be hosted at two iconic venues: Lugogo Tennis Complex and Kampala Club Limited.

The announcement was made during an official launch event held today at Kampala Club, where Uganda Tennis Association (UTA) First Vice President Daniel Kyazze revealed the expanded format.

For the first time in the tournament’s history, competitions will feature wheelchair athletes, junior players, seniors (18+), and senior veterans aged 40 and above, in both men’s and women’s singles and doubles events.

“This is a significant milestone in our efforts to make tennis more inclusive and accessible to all,” said Kyazze.

The 2025 edition will also highlight progress in Uganda’s sports officiating. Unlike past tournaments, this year’s event will be refereed by a Ugandan official, Charles Wanyama. UTA Chairman Mathias Nalyanya praised the appointment, calling it a testament to the association’s investment in developing local coaching and officiating talent.

“We are developing coaches and officials; that is why we have Wanyama Charles as the tournament referee,” Nalyanya stated.

Plascon, the tournament’s official sponsor, reiterated its commitment to supporting inclusive sporting initiatives.

Kato Moses, Head of Sales at Plascon, said the company’s involvement was driven by the UTA’s renewed focus on inclusivity and talent development.
