Two teams still have a legitimate chance of winning the 2025 Uganda Women’s Rugby Premiership.
Still-unbeaten table leaders Black Pearls who have fifty-five points and second-placed Thunderbirds who are five points adrift. But when you look at the points difference, Thunderbirds are comfortably better by seventy-three.
Whether by chance or by design, for the fixtures to have Thunderbirds hosting Black Pearls in the final round of the season has set up an exciting climax.
The team on top of the table after conclusion of the final round of the tournament will be crowned champions.
Thus, come Saturday, May 17, the two archrivals will battle against each other for the 2025 title in a “grand finale” of sorts.
For context, a team earns four points for a win and can also get a bonus point if the win is by three tries or more than the opponent. If a team loses within seven points of the opponent, they receive a losing point.
This means that Black Pearls need just the losing bonus point to top the table while Thunderbirds need nothing short of a bonus point win.
However, Thunderbirds and Black Pearls will not be the only premiership teams in action on the day. The other participants; Avengers, Panthers, Ewes and She Wolves, will also play their final match of the season.
In order to mark the conclusion of what has been a dramatic yet competitive season, Uganda Rugby Union (URU) decided to host all the matches at one venue in a “unified grand finale.”
This decision, agreed upon with the clubs’ heads according to a press statement published on Monday night, aims to “give the season a fitting close and celebrate the strides made in the women’s game.”
Kyadondo Rugby Club, the Thunderbirds’ home ground, will host the final round matches.
Full Round 14 (Season Finale) Fixtures:
• 11 a.m.: Avengers v Panthers
• 1 p.m.: Ewes v She Wolves
• 3 p.m.: Thunderbirds v Black Pearls
A lot is at stake! Ewes (16 points) and She Wolves (15 points) will battle for fourth place while a win over third-placed Avengers will lift Panthers from the bottom of the table.
URU’s leadership has invited all fans, supporters and stakeholders to Kyadondo to witness the action and celebrate with women’s rugby clubs on their season finale.
For those unable to make it to Kyadondo on Saturday, NBS Sport will broadcast all three matches live on our channel and the AfroMobile app.
