Wilder Departs Sheffield United After Playoff Heartbreak

Sheffield United and manager Chris Wilder have mutually agreed to part ways after the club’s agonizing failure to gain promotion to the Premier League.

The decision follows a dramatic 2-1 playoff final loss to Sunderland, with the winning goal scored deep into stoppage time.

Wilder, who had signed an extension until 2028 earlier this year, saw his team finish third in the Championship.

“I’m obviously disappointed to be leaving, particularly because we were so close to getting back to the Premier League. I’m a Sheffielder through and through, I love this club and this city and that feeling will never change,” Wilder stated.

This marks Wilder’s second departure from the club; his first spell ended in March 2021 when the Blades were relegated from the Premier League.

“I depart with some cherished memories and feel proud to be talked about in the same manner that special Sheffield United managers are remembered,” he added.
