Real Madrid have signed Spanish defender Alvaro Carreras from Benfica for €50m (£43m), bringing the 22-year-old back to his former club.
Carreras, a left-back, was in Real Madrid’s youth system from 2017 to 2020 before moving to Manchester United.
He never played for United’s first team, spending time on loan at Preston and Granada before a permanent move to Benfica in May 2024 for a reported £5m.
Benfica will receive a 20% sell-on fee from Manchester United on anything above what they paid for the player.
Carreras made 68 appearances and scored five goals for the Portuguese side, helping them finish second in the league last season.
He has signed a six-year contract with Real Madrid.
