Aryna Sabalenka has successfully defended her US Open title, defeating American Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in a tense final.
The victory marks the world number one’s first Grand Slam trophy of the year, a long-awaited win after suffering two previous major final defeats this season.
Sabalenka, 27, showed impressive composure, telling ESPN, “I didn’t want to let [my emotions] happen again.”
While Anisimova’s performance was an improvement on her last major final, her inconsistency ultimately proved to be her downfall.
Sabalenka, who has been the WTA Tour’s most dominant player, sealed the win on her third championship point, confirming her status as one of the sport’s elite players.
