Canada captain Alphonso Davies will miss Friday’s World Cup opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto after failing to recover from a hamstring tear.
Head coach Jesse Marsch confirmed scans showed progress but not enough to clear the Bayern Munich star.
Davies, 25, has battled repeated injuries since tearing his ACL in March 2025, with further muscle setbacks disrupting his return. Canada hope he can feature later in the group stage, with matches against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 25 in Vancouver.
Marsch said the medical team is working daily with Bayern and Davies’ private physio, optimistic he could be ready “within days or a week.”
With 58 caps and 15 goals, Davies remains central to Canada’s ambitions on home soil.
