Musemeza, Ssesazi Shine as Mburo Blasters, Victoria Strikers Claim Crucial Great Lakes T20 Wins

The Great Lakes Men’s T20 continued to produce runs and drama at Lugogo Cricket Oval on Thursday as Mburo Blasters defeated Kyoga Avengers by 26 runs before Victoria Strikers completed a convincing 59-run victory over Bunyonyi Warriors to strengthen their push up the standings.

Mburo Blasters delivered the batting performance of the tournament so far, piling up a competition-high 234 for six after being sent in to bat by Kyoga Avengers.

Charles Musemeza starred with a brilliant 75 off 40 balls, smashing eight fours and four sixes to lay the foundation for the imposing total. Fahad Mutagana added 37 before Riazat Ali Shah produced a late assault, hammering 54 from just 24 deliveries, including six sixes. Steven Wabwose and Edwin Nuwagaba then provided the finishing touches with unbeaten knocks of 20 and 21 respectively.

Despite the heavy scoring, Gerald Olipa stood out for Kyoga Avengers with an impressive five-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 5/50.

Kyoga’s chase suffered an early setback when Conrad Lubwama and Olipa were dismissed inside the opening two overs. However, Cyrus Kakuru led the recovery with an entertaining 77 from 43 balls, while Ronald Lutaaya contributed 33 and Robert Owili blasted 23 off only eight deliveries.

Captain Juma Miyaji remained unbeaten on 45 but the required rate continued to climb. Mburo’s bowlers kept their composure, with Wabwose returning economical figures of 2/22 while Sowobi Yunus and Riazat Ali Shah claimed two wickets each to restrict Kyoga to 208 for six.

Musemeza’s match-winning innings earned him the Player of the Match award and helped Mburo close the gap on the tournament leaders.

In the afternoon fixture, Victoria Strikers maintained their recent resurgence with a commanding victory over Bunyonyi Warriors.

Simon Ssesazi provided the early fireworks, blasting 58 off just 24 balls with eight boundaries and three sixes. Amos Ahurra added a measured 40 from 34 deliveries, while Robert Ajuna and Mathew Musinguzi chipped in with valuable contributions as Victoria posted 218 for eight from their 20 overs.

Bunyonyi’s bowlers struggled to contain the scoring and also conceded 20 wides. Johnathan Nyiiro claimed three wickets, while Musa Majid Ramathan and Kassim Adam also got among the wickets.

Chasing 219, Bunyonyi made a positive start through Robinson Obuya and Anas Baig but lost momentum as wickets fell regularly. Joseph Baguma top-scored with 31, Baig made 30, and Ramathan finished unbeaten on 18.

Victoria’s bowlers then took control. Captain Pius Oloka produced a superb spell of 4/14, while Jaffer Ochaya matched him with four wickets of his own. Christopher Kidega and Musinguzi picked up a wicket each as Bunyonyi were dismissed for 159 in 18 overs.

Ssesazi was named Player of the Match for his explosive half-century at the top of the order.

After seven match days, Kyoga Avengers remain top of the standings on 10 points despite the defeat. Mburo Blasters moved to eight points in second place, while Victoria Strikers climbed to six points. Bunyonyi Warriors remain bottom on four points.

Attention now turns to Friday’s fixtures, with Kyoga Avengers facing the in-form Victoria Strikers in the morning match before Bunyonyi Warriors take on Mburo Blasters in the afternoon encounter.
