Over the past quarter-century, the Wakiso-based institution has evolved into the undisputed gold standard of school sports in Uganda, cultivating a football culture that has become the envy of the nation and a benchmark across the region.
Its illustrious football programme has nurtured hundreds of gifted athletes, many of whom have gone on to achieve greatness at club and international level. Yet among this remarkable assembly of talent stands an elite group whose achievements, influence, longevity, and brilliance have elevated them into the pantheon of Kitende’s finest exports.
As the school marks this historic milestone, we celebrate the 11 greatest footballers to emerge from the institution’s famed football conveyor belt.
11. Murushid Juuko
A towering defensive stalwart blessed with immense physical presence, exceptional leadership qualities, and commanding aerial prowess, Murushid Juuko ranks among the pioneering success stories of the Kitende football project.
The rugged centre-back enjoyed distinguished spells with Vipers SC, SC Victoria University, Simba SC of Tanzania, and Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca. His most glittering years arguably came at Simba, where he established himself as one of East Africa’s most dependable defenders while collecting multiple Tanzanian Premier League titles.
On the international stage, Juuko played an instrumental role in Uganda’s historic qualification for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, helping end a painful 39-year absence from the continent’s premier football competition. He subsequently represented the Uganda Cranes at both the 2017 and 2019 AFCON tournaments, cementing his reputation as one of the most accomplished defenders of his generation.
10. Nicholas Wadada
Few full-backs in Ugandan football history have embodied consistency, resilience, and professionalism quite like Nicholas Wadada.
Renowned for his blistering pace, boundless energy, and relentless attacking instincts, Wadada graduated from Kitende before blossoming into one of the country’s most reliable performers. Successful separate spells at Vipers showcased his immense qualities, while his move to Tanzanian side Azam FC further enhanced his standing within the region.
For over a decade, Wadada remained a trusted servant of the Uganda Cranes, contributing significantly to one of the most successful eras in the national team’s modern history. His unwavering commitment and admirable longevity have made him a shining example for aspiring footballers.
9. Halid Lwaliwa
Elegant, composed, and tactically astute, Halid Lwaliwa has forged a highly impressive career through a blend of intelligence and defensive excellence.
The accomplished centre-back first distinguished himself at Vipers before earning opportunities to play in Europe in North Macedonia and the Middle East. His calmness under pressure, superior reading of the game, and natural leadership have consistently set him apart.
Lwaliwa has been a dependable figure for the Uganda Cranes and is regarded as one of the country’s most polished and accomplished defensive operators.
8. Yunus Sentamu
Gifted with dazzling creativity, exquisite technical ability, and an eye for spectacular goals, Yunus Sentamu emerged as one of the most exciting attacking talents of his generation, through St. Mary’s Kitende.
His electrifying performances earned him a move to Congolese giants AS Vita Club, where he further showcased his immense potential. He later went to Europe, before returning to Vipers where he has enjoyed remarkable success. Throughout his career, Sentamu has captivated supporters with his flair, unpredictability, and ability to unlock stubborn defences.
At the international level, he has over the years represented Uganda with distinction and played his part during a transformative period that restored belief and ambition within the national team setup, including the 2014 CHAN.
7. Aziz Kayondo
Among the brightest products of Kitende’s modern era, Aziz Kayondo represents the future as much as the present.
Blessed with explosive athleticism, remarkable technical quality, and exceptional attacking instincts, the dynamic left-back rose rapidly through the ranks to become one of Uganda’s most promising talents. His outstanding displays for Vipers and Uganda’s youth teams attracted widespread admiration and international attention.
Kayondo’s continued rise on the global stage, playing in Spain, Israel and Czechia serves as further evidence of Kitende’s unrivalled ability to nurture elite football talent capable of competing beyond Uganda’s borders.
6. Ibrahim Sadam Juma
Few midfielders have possessed the breathtaking natural ability and effortless elegance of Ibrahim Sadam Juma, who is now one of the coaches of the Uganda U17 team
Widely regarded as one of the most gifted footballers Uganda has produced in the modern era, Sadam dazzled supporters with his superb vision, exquisite passing range, and extraordinary technical mastery. His brilliance at Vipers paved the way to moves to across Africa and beyond borders.
Although injuries occasionally interrupted his progress, his undeniable talent and achievements remain a testament to his exceptional quality. At his best, Sadam was a footballing artist capable of dictating matches with astonishing ease.
5. Mike Mutyaba
Mike Mutyaba built a career defined by versatility, intelligence, and enduring excellence. He’s one of the finest to emerge out of SMASK.
Whether deployed in midfield or attack, the technically gifted playmaker consistently delivered influential performances for every club he represented. His distinguished career included successful spells at El-Merriekh, TP Mazembe, Vipers, and KCCA, where he won numerous honours and established himself as a respected leader.
Mutyaba’s remarkable professionalism, coupled with his ability to inspire teammates, ensured he remained a pivotal figure wherever he played.
4. William Kizito Luwagga
Blessed with breathtaking speed, dazzling footwork, and fearless attacking intent, William Kizito Luwagga became one of Uganda’s most celebrated football exports.
The exciting winger carved out an admirable international career that took him across Europe especially in Portugal and Asia. His ability to torment defenders, create chances, and electrify spectators made him a treasured asset at every club he represented.
For the Uganda Cranes, Luwagga delivered numerous memorable performances and played an important role in elevating the profile of Ugandan football on the international stage.
3. Godfrey Walusimbi
One of the finest left-backs ever to wear Uganda’s national colours, Godfrey Walusimbi enjoyed a distinguished and highly decorated career.
A model of consistency and professionalism, Walusimbi excelled for SC Villa, Vipers, Gor Mahia in Kenya, Don Bosco in DR Congo, Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa and Vllaznia in Albania. His defensive solidity, tactical intelligence, and inspirational leadership made him indispensable throughout much of his career.
Most significantly, he was a key architect of Uganda’s historic qualification to the 2017 and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, achievements that restored pride and prestige to the national team.
2. Emmanuel Okwi
Few footballers have thrilled Ugandan supporters quite like the magnificent Emmanuel Okwi.
A prolific marksman blessed with explosive pace, clinical finishing, and an insatiable appetite for goals, Okwi established himself as one of the greatest forwards in Uganda’s football history. His stellar career saw him shine for Villa, Simba SC, Young Africans, Etoile du Sahel, Sonderjyske, Al Ittihad Alexandria and several other teams across the world.
At the international level, his achievements are nothing short of extraordinary. As captain and talisman of the Uganda Cranes, Okwi scored numerous crucial goals and inspired the national team during some of its most memorable campaigns. His famous strike against DR Congo at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations remains one of the defining moments of modern Ugandan football.

1. Farouk Miya
At the summit of Kitende’s football royalty stands the exceptional Farouk Miya, a player whose name has become synonymous with excellence and especially, discipline.
A product of the school’s celebrated football programme, Miya announced himself as a prodigious talent while still a teenager and swiftly developed into one of Uganda’s most accomplished footballers. His journey took him to some of Europe’s competitive leagues, where he showcased his abilities in Belgium, Croatia, Turkey, and beyond.
For the Uganda Cranes, Miya evolved into a transformational figure and one of the country’s most prolific modern-day internationals. His goals, leadership, and match-winning contributions repeatedly propelled Uganda towards success during crucial qualification campaigns.
Helping the Cranes end their decades-long AFCON exile remains among his crowning achievements, while his service as national team captain further underlines his immense stature within Ugandan football. Combining talent, influence, consistency, and achievement, Miya stands as the ultimate embodiment of the Kitende football dream.
Special Mention: Tony Odur – The Pioneer Captain
No account of St. Mary’s SS Kitende’s football journey is complete without Tony Odur, the inspirational captain who led the school to its first-ever Copa Coca-Cola Schools Championship in 2004. That historic triumph marked the beginning of Kitende’s rise into Uganda’s most successful school football institution, with Odur serving as the figurehead of the generation that laid the foundation for the dynasty that followed.
A gifted forward renowned for his creativity, leadership, and eye for goal, Odur went on to enjoy a distinguished club career with Express FC, Bunamwaya SC (now Vipers SC), KCCA FC, Denmark’s Brabrand IF, and Zambia’s Nkana FC. He won league titles during his career and played a key role in KCCA’s memorable CAF Champions League campaign in 2014, scoring crucial goals against some of the continent’s top clubs.
At international level, Odur represented the Uganda Cranes and was among the country’s most respected attackers of his era. His memorable hat-trick against Burundi in the 2010 CHAN qualifiers remains one of the highlights of his national team career. While many Kitende alumni have gone on to achieve great success, Odur’s place in history is secure as the trailblazing captain who helped launch one of the greatest football legacies in Ugandan school sports.
