Uganda and Kenya to Tee Off for Golf Supremacy

The prestigious Uganda Golf Club Kitante is set to host the second edition of the Uganda-Kenya Coast Golf Tournament this Saturday, November 9th, 2024.

Over 220 golfers from Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa are expected to converge on the immaculate par-72 course for a day of intense competition and camaraderie.

The tournament is more than just a sporting event; it’s a testament to the growing economic and cultural ties between the two East African nations.

By promoting golf tourism, the event aims to attract visitors who will contribute significantly to local economies.

Paul Charles Rukundo, the Captain of Uganda Golf Club, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “We are thrilled to host this prestigious tournament and welcome golfers from across the region. This is a significant step in promoting golf tourism and highlighting the strong bond between Uganda and Kenya.”

The first leg of the tournament was held last year at the Vipingo Ridge Golf Resort in Mombasa, Kenya, where Uganda emerged victorious.

This year’s event serves as a prelude to the 3rd Uganda-Kenya Coast Tourism Conference, which will take place on November 20th and 21st, further emphasizing the importance of cross-border tourism.

Ambassador Paul Mukumbya, Uganda’s Consul General in Mombasa, highlighted the broader economic and diplomatic significance of the event.

He emphasized the complementary nature of the two countries’ tourism offerings, stating, “Kenya has stunning beaches, while Uganda offers majestic mountains and thrilling adventure experiences like trekking the Nile and chimpanzee watching. Together, we can offer unique and diverse tourism products.”

The tournament will feature fierce competition across men’s, women’s, and senior divisions.

After the 18-hole competition, participants and spectators can look forward to a lively “19th Hole” celebration, complete with music, dinner, and a festive atmosphere.

Golf tourism has the potential to significantly boost local economies. On average, a golfer spends around $1,500 during their travels, contributing to hotels, restaurants, and other businesses.

Derrick Muhumuza, Uganda Golf Club’s Competitions and PR Director, expressed optimism for the future of the event, stating, “We expect the tournament to grow exponentially in the coming years, fostering even greater collaboration and tourism exchange between Uganda and Kenya.”
