Silverbacks Guard Drileba Lights Up Her World, Her Rules Camp

On Saturday, November 23, 2024, Uganda celebrated FIBA’s globally renowned Her World, Her Rules campaign in Rubanda District, a transformative basketball event aimed at empowering young girls through sports.

Hosted at St. Agatha Girl’s School in Kakore, the initiative brought together over 60 girls aged 6–16 from five schools, providing them with basketball training and life skills to build confidence and challenge gender inequality.

A Day of Skills and Empowerment

The camp was led by some of Uganda’s top basketball figures, including Silverbacks guard Tonny Drileba and National Basketball League stars Maureen Amoding and Sarah Ageno.

Other trainers, such as Ruth Atuhaire and Vincent Etyang, guided participants through foundational basketball techniques like passing, dribbling, and shooting.

Participants later showcased their learning in 3×3 games, with standout performers rewarded for their efforts.

Beyond the court, the girls attended sessions on critical life topics such as menstrual hygiene, first aid, and the importance of education.

Rewards and Recognition

The event culminated in an award ceremony led by FUBA Women’s Commissioner, Racheal Ainamasiko Atuhaire.

Certificates and sports equipment—including basketballs, sneakers, and uniforms—were distributed to participants to ensure they remain active in the sport.

“It was a wonderful day, and the girls enjoyed themselves. I hope this marks the beginning of serious basketball programs in these schools,” Atuhaire remarked.

Building a Legacy

The Her World, Her Rules campaign is a testament to the power of sports in fostering equality and resilience.

By providing young girls with both athletic and life skills, it ensures a brighter future for participants and encourages communities to embrace basketball as a tool for empowerment.

This year’s event not only inspired the next generation of female athletes but also underscored the importance of sports in breaking societal barriers and promoting inclusivity in Uganda.
