The National Council of Sports (NCS) arena in Lugogo transformed into a hive of activity as the National Novices Boxing Championship commenced on Monday 9th December attracting hundreds of aspiring boxers from across Uganda.
This prestigious event, set to conclude on December 14th, provides a crucial platform for emerging talent to showcase their skills and potentially launch professional careers.
Boxers representing schools, clubs, and community programs filled the arena, exuding a palpable sense of anticipation.
The championship, a cornerstone of Uganda’s boxing development, offers these young athletes a valuable opportunity to test their mettle against their peers and gain valuable experience.
Michelle Nakkazi, the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) Competition Manager, emphasized the profound importance of this event in nurturing future champions.
“We commenced with the novices weighing in on Saturday, registering a remarkable 847 boxers. Today marks the first day of action, featuring approximately 200 bouts involving 400 boxers. The competition will continue throughout the week, culminating in finals on Saturday alongside the Champions League,” she stated.
One of the day’s most captivating bouts witnessed a clash between two boxers of contrasting ages: 32-year-old Goloba Abdul from Victorious Boxing Club, Masaka, and 19-year-old Oche Minor from 256 Boxing Club, Iganga.
Despite his age and the inevitable challenges that come with it, Goloba displayed unwavering resilience. However, the younger Oche ultimately emerged victorious, expressing immense excitement over his triumph.
