Uganda’s Gazelles Rise in FIBA World Rankings and Secure National Federation Progression Award

In a remarkable achievement, the Uganda Women’s National Basketball Team, known as the Gazelles, has been honored with the National Federation Progression Award for their outstanding performance during the period from 2021 to 2023.

The prestigious National Federation Progression Award was granted to the top three most improved National Federations, based on their exceptional progress between 2021 and July 2023, as assessed by the FIBA World Ranking.

Uganda’s Women’s National Basketball Team secured the remarkable second position among the “Most Improved Teams Girls 2021-2023,” with Slovenia leading the way. Portugal, Samoa, and Tanzania also achieved notable progress, sharing the third position.

This  occasion took place during the FIBA Awards Ceremony, held in Manila as a part of the XXII FIBA Congress. The event serves as a platform to honor and celebrate National Federations for their remarkable achievements, and the Gazelles’ well-deserved recognition stands as a testament to their dedication and exceptional performance.

Adding to their historic journey, the Gazelles created history earlier this month by defeating DRC in the Afrobasket Women’s Tournament in Kigali, Rwanda. This victory propelled them to the quarter-finals of the Women’s Afrobasket tournament for the first time in their history, marking a truly monumental achievement for Ugandan basketball.
