In a stunning move, Jose Mourinho has been appointed the new manager of Benfica on a deal until the summer of 2027.
The 62-year-old returns to the club where he began his managerial career 25 years ago, succeeding Bruno Lage who was sacked after a Champions League defeat.
Mourinho inherits a side in sixth place in the Primeira Liga and will face former clubs Chelsea and Real Madrid in the Champions League later this year.
“I’m not the important thing—Benfica is important,” said Mourinho, who joins after a brief and turbulent spell at Fenerbahce that left many of their fans feeling betrayed.
The “Special One” has won 21 major trophies in his career, including two Champions League titles. His first game back will be on Saturday against AVS.
