The Ministry of Education and Sports is set to sign a memorandum of understanding today with the Engineering Brigade Corps of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces to begin major redevelopment works at the Mandela National Stadium.

The proposed project aims for completion within 12 to 16 months and will expand the stadium to a 64,125-seat capacity.

Plans also include 1,907 parking spaces, with provision for approximately 300 buses, alongside the construction of a mini indoor arena, futsal facilities, and a race track as part of wider improvements to the sports complex.

The upgrade is expected to strengthen Uganda’s sports infrastructure and boost readiness to host AFCON 2027.

Namboole is only one piece of Uganda’s preparations. Other projects include a new Hoima City Stadium, ongoing construction of Akii Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira and upgrading of training grounds and transport infrastructure.
