Uganda drops to lowest ranking since 2015

Uganda has slipped to 90th in the latest FIFA ranking, their lowest position in the world since April 2013.

The drop of four places means that Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic’s side is now below Curacao, Jordan, Haiti, and Syria in the world ranking.

Uganda’s continued disappointing results recently have seen a gradual decline in the rankings for the Cranes who were ranked 82nd in December 2021.

The Cranes have since dropped further places, ranking 84th in March and then 86th by March 2022.

The drop was expected after Micho’s men endured a cold start to their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign with an underwhelming 2-0 defeat away to Algeria.

They were then held to a 1-1 draw at home to Niger which currently ranks 119th.

Pressure has been piling on Cranes head coach Micho in more ways than just the team’s results with the latest rankings further exposing how low the team has sunk.

Micho will seek to arrest the situation both on and off the pitch next month as the Cranes embark on their Africa Nations Championship qualifiers.

Uganda start their journey in the second round as they await the winner between Tanzania and Somalia.

The Cranes will then resume their AFCON qualifiers against Tanzania – who are currently ranked 141st – in a double header in September.

Kenya is ranked 102nd, Rwanda is 136 and South Sudan is ranked 165th.

African champions Senegal remain the top ranked nation on the continent, while they are ranked 18th in the world. Morocco (22), Tunisia (30), Nigeria (31), and Cameroon (38) are inside the top five.

Five-time world champions Brazil continue to be the number one ranked nation in the world with Belgium, Argentina, France, and England all in the top five.
