In a tightly contested match at the 13th African Games, Uganda’s U20 men’s football team, the Uganda Hippos settled for silver after a late winner from Ghana sealed their fate.
Ghana controlled the game early on, nearly grabbing an early lead within the opening 20 minutes, only to be denied by the referee’s decision, citing an infringement in the box.
Undeterred, both sides continued to press, crafting opportunities in a fiercely competitive first half, yet failing to break the deadlock.
With the prospect of a penalty shootout looming large, Ghana’s Jerry Afriyie emerged as the hero, delivering a stunning strike from outside the box in the 91st minute, shattering Uganda’s dreams of gold.
Ghana’s triumph not only secured gold but also etched their name in history as the first nation to clinch both men’s and women’s football titles in the same edition of the African Games.
Under the guidance of coach Morley Byekwaso, the Uganda Hippos showcased commendable prowess throughout the tournament, joining the ranks of Uganda’s national teams to secure podium finishes, alongside the Rugby Sevens, Lady Cranes, and Queen Cranes.
