ICC T20 World Cup Global Qualifiers: Uganda finish fifth

The national senior men’s team, the cricket cranes ended the ICC T20 World Cup Global Qualifiers on a good note following their back-to-back victories.

The cricket cranes having failed to progress to the semi-finals dropped down to the plate games where they had to fight for positions, and it is something they did very well.

Laurence Mahatlane’s side played Jersey in the play-off semi-final and beat them by five runs before overcoming Hong Kong in the plate final by four runs.

Victory over Hong Kong meant Uganda will return home as fifth place finishers in the qualifiers.

Uganda, on their first appearance at the Global Qualifiers in 2013 managed just a solitary win that came against Italy. They leave Zimbabwe with three wins bagged. A great improvement.

Mahatlane says it was a learning process. “It’s been an excellent learning experience for the boys.  They had to learn the hard way.”

Uganda’s wins over Hong Kong and Jersey will act as confidence boosters since they still have to contend with the same in the third round of the Challenge League B to be hosted by Jersey later this month.

The cricket cranes return home on Tuesday and take a two-day rest before resuming training as they ready themselves for the third round of the ICC Challenge League B – Another World Cup qualifier.
