In a tightly contested match, Kenya emerged victorious over Tanzania with a final score of 57-47 in the FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers held at MTN Arena Lugogo.
Kenya started strong, leading 19-13 at the end of the first quarter. Despite Tanzania’s efforts to close the gap, Kenya maintained their lead throughout the game, finishing the second quarter at 27-25, the third at 42-36, and ultimately securing the victory with a final score of 57-47.
For Kenya, Mariam Wangare Buuri was a standout performer, logging 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists in 36 minutes on the court. Roseline Akinyi also made a significant contribution with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Valentine Korir added 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists to the team’s effort.
Tanzania’s Elizabeth Laizer delivered an impressive performance, scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in 35 minutes of play. However, her efforts were not enough to overcome Kenya’s dominance.
Despite committing more turnovers (43) than Tanzania (36), Kenya’s shooting efficiency and rebounding were crucial to their success.
Kenya’s victory marks a significant step in their quest for a spot in the FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket Championship in South Africa.
