Uganda’s opening bowler at the 2024 T20 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Alpesh Ramjani, believes that participating in their maiden tournament offered crucial lessons for the team.
Ramjani entered the global showpiece following an outstanding performance last year, where he took 55 wickets—the most by any player in a calendar year—earning him a nomination for the 2023 ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year accolade.
Reflecting on the experience, he said, “The lessons that we have learned will make us better players and also improve our junior players. We will implement these experiences in the upcoming Challenge League B to enhance our cricket.”
“It’s a dream come true for us as players and Ugandans. The fans supported us throughout the tournament regardless of the results we had,” Ramjani noted.
Uganda won one of their four games at the tournament, overcoming Papua New Guinea by 3 wickets for a historic victory. They lost by 134 and 125 runs to Afghanistan and co-hosts West Indies, respectively, and suffered a 9-wicket loss at the hands of New Zealand.
The former Aziz Damani all-rounder highlighted the match against 2021 runners-up New Zealand as a significant moment, saying, “Every team at the World Cup was great, but New Zealand was the one team that made a difference to us, and playing against idols was a great thing.”
Focus now turns to the ICC Cricket Challenge League B, scheduled for November in Kampala.
