Rafael Nadal has yet to confirm his participation in the US Open 2024, stating that his decision will be made after the upcoming Paris Olympics.
Nadal, who is currently in Bastad, Sweden, participating in the Nordea Open, is using the clay court ATP 250 event as preparation for the Olympics, which will be held on the clay courts of Roland Garros.
The 38-year-old Spaniard reached the semifinals in both singles and doubles at the Nordea Open, partnering with Casper Ruud in doubles.
Following his singles semifinal victory over Duje Ajduković, Nadal emphasized that his name on the US Open entry list does not guarantee his participation.
“I needed to book to have the chance to decide after that, that’s as simple as that. Nothing changed for me. I’m going to decide what’s going on after the Olympics,” Nadal said in a press conference.
Nadal will represent Spain in the doubles at the Olympics alongside Carlos Alcaraz and has confirmed his participation in the Laver Cup. However, he remains uncertain about competing in New York.
“I am not sure at all to be in New York or not. No decision today and the decision will not happen before the end of the Olympics,” he added.
Despite ongoing recovery from multiple injuries and hip surgery, Nadal has shown significant progress. After his semifinal win, he expressed happiness about reaching his first final since May 2022.
“I am playing much better than two months ago, but I must continue to progress. I have to accept all the challenges that come and be willing to suffer on the court to continue giving myself opportunities to succeed,” he stated.
Nadal is set to face seventh-seed Nuno Borges in the final of the Nordea Open on July 21. This will be Borges’ first final on tour.
