The first of seven legs of the Nile Special 7s series is set to begin this weekend at the Entebbe Works Grounds, with Plascon Mongers hosting the national series opener.
The two-day Entebbe 7s tournament, scheduled for August 10-11, will feature 16 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams. This year’s edition comes with increased support from sponsors, as Nile Special has confirmed sponsorship worth UGX 570 million.
The 2024 series will run from August 10 to October 6, covering the east, west, north, and central regions of Uganda. The circuits will take place in Entebbe, Mbale, Kyadondo, Gulu, Jinja, Mbarara, and Bweyogerere. The tournament aims to expand the reach of 7s rugby across the country, with both core and invitational teams involved.
Uganda Rugby Union CEO Isaac Lutwama commented on the preparations: “A lot of effort has gone into organizing this tournament, with the local organizing committee conducting venue inspections. Tororo was replaced by Mbale as the only change, and for us, it’s an opportunity to put up an exciting 7s show for every host.”
Nile Special brand manager Eric Malinga reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to the series: “Based on our theme of raising the game, we opted to increase the package available to the teams. We have doubled the prize money from UGX 500,000 to UGX 1,000,000 and we ask the teams to step up and raise their game.”
Plascon Mongers team manager Jonathan Mukiibi expressed confidence in hosting the opener: “All is set, and the pitch is in good shape. With seven circuits ahead, our target is to set the pace. The team is in good form, and all other details have been taken care of, so I urge the fans to come and support the game.”
