UPL Preview: Wakiso Giants, Vipers Face Off in High-Stakes Clash

Uganda Premier League action continues today with a lone high-stakes fixture that will see Wakiso Giants host Vipers SC at the Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium in Wakiso.

The 4 pm showdown promises a fierce contest between two sides with deep-rooted ties, both on the pitch and off it.

Vipers, the six-time league champions, are looking to continue their pursuit of top spot, as a victory would see them move joint top of the table with current leaders KCCA.

The Venoms come into this encounter fresh off an incredible 2-1 victory over SC Villa at Kitende, while Wakiso Giants are hoping to bounce back from a narrow 1-0 defeat to UPDF before the international break.

Notably, the fixture will see several players and coaches face their former employers.

Wakiso Giants boast former Vipers players such as James Alitho, Tom Masiko, and David Bagoole, with Marvin Mukiibi and Rahmat Ssenfuka missing due to injury.

Vipers, on the other hand, have former Purple Sharks right-back Grant Matsiko and striker Kenneth Kimera in their ranks.

Tactician John Ayala Luyinda will lead the Venoms, and he officially steps in for Serbian coach Nikola Kavazovic, who parted ways with Vipers just yesterday.

On the opposite side, Wakiso’s head coach, Steven Bengo, will be eyeing his side’s first victory over Vipers, a team they have never beaten in any competition since their promotion to the top flight in 2019.

The Purple Sharks have suffered five defeats and drawn five times in their previous encounters with Vipers, with their best home result being a draw.

Both teams will be eager to make a statement, but Wakiso Giants face the challenge of overcoming Vipers without key players like William Luwagga Kizito, Alex Komakech, and the injured Rahmat Ssenfuka.

For Vipers, a win would not only elevate them to the top of the standings but also increase the pressure on KCCA, who are currently leading the league.
