Sergio Perez’s Formula 1 future remains uncertain after his departure from Red Bull Racing at the end of the 2024 season.

Following a mixed 2024 campaign, where a strong start faltered dramatically, Perez is exploring various options for the next chapter of his career. While links to Formula E, IndyCar, and even the Le Mans 24 Hours have surfaced, a return to the F1 grid in 2026 with the incoming Cadillac team has emerged as a primary objective.

Perez’s 2024 season was a tale of two halves. He amassed 85 points in the first five races, including four podium finishes.

However, his performance declined sharply thereafter, managing only 67 points in the remaining 19 races, with a mere nine points scored in the final eight Grand Prix weekends.

This slump contributed to Red Bull losing second place in the Constructors’ Championship, despite Max Verstappen’s dominant title win with 437 points. Perez finished the season in eighth place with 152 points, a significant drop from his second-place finish in 2023.

“Everything happened very quickly at the end of last season,” Perez commented after his Red Bull exit. “I didn’t expect to leave the team. In the next six months, I will make a decision on what I want for the next step in my career.”

Now, a potential pathway back to F1 has emerged with Cadillac. According to reports, a return to the pinnacle of motorsport with the American manufacturer in 2026 is Perez’s “big goal.”

This move could be mutually beneficial. For Cadillac, Perez brings invaluable F1 experience and a proven track record, potentially surpassing the value of a rookie driver.

Former Haas team boss Guenther Steiner suggested that Perez would be an ideal candidate for Cadillac, highlighting his experience and ability to contribute to the team’s development. Steiner also noted Perez’s strong performances in less pressured environments, suggesting a move to Cadillac could revitalize his career.

Furthermore, Perez’s association with Carlos Slim and his sponsorship network could provide a significant financial boost to the Andretti-Cadillac partnership.

The financial implications are substantial, with reports suggesting Perez could bring considerable financial backing. His presence is also expected to increase the team’s visibility and popularity, particularly in key markets like Mexico, Austin, Miami, and Las Vegas.

While Perez’s immediate future remains unclear, the prospect of a 2026 F1 return with Cadillac offers a compelling narrative.

His experience, combined with potential financial benefits, makes him an attractive proposition for the new team.
