National men’s basketball team, the Silverbacks head coach Mandy Guruni says his side is determined to qualify for the 2025 FIBA Afrobasket tournament due 12-24 August in Angola.
The side will need to finish among the top 3 teams in group B of the qualifiers set for 21-23 February in Libya to seal a fourth successive appearance at the continental showpiece.
Following days of training in Lugogo, the side is set to depart for Egypt on Friday evening, where they will hold a four-day camp and will be joined by the foreign-based players.
“The competition is tough and nothing will come easy. We are up against basketball playing nations but having been at the last three editions of Afrobasket we are focused on getting back there,” Juruni noted.
Juruni says continuity is key as the roster features seven local and five foreign-based players.
“The players have been with us over the years. Jonathan Komagum, Ishmail Wainright, Timothy Womala and Robinson Odoch are familiar faces. Joel Kayiira and Peter Obleng are relatively the new additions so for us as coaches it’s important to have the chemistry going.”
The Silverbacks are pitted against hosts Libya, Nigeria, and Cape Verde, having finished sixth at the previous edition.
