Finnish driver Juha Miettinen has died after a seven-car collision during Saturday’s Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie qualifiers in Germany.
The race was halted after the crash three laps in and later suspended.
Emergency crews were unable to save Miettinen, who died at the medical centre. Six other drivers were hospitalised but none suffered life-threatening injuries.
Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen, set to race at the circuit in May, expressed shock and condolences, calling the tragedy a reminder of motorsport’s dangers.
A minute’s silence will be held before Sunday’s race in Miettinen’s honour.
