Uganda’s women’s cricket team, the Victoria Pearls, will resume action on Wednesday, March 12, as they take on Hong Kong in the second round of the LYCA Women’s Day Cup.
The team, currently leading the standings with four points, is coming off a nail-biting one-run victory over Namibia and will be looking to build on that momentum after their scheduled rest day on Tuesday.
The Pearls’ last outing saw a stunning bowling performance from Sarah Akiteng, who claimed five wickets for just 14 runs to help Uganda defend a modest total of 71.
The victory not only solidified Uganda’s place at the top of the table but also proved their ability to win under pressure.
With two wins in three matches—against Hong Kong and Namibia—the Victoria Pearls are in a strong position to qualify for the final on March 16.
However, they will need to maintain their focus in the second round, where they will face Hong Kong again before crucial encounters with Nepal and Namibia.
Coach Lawrence Ssematimba will likely rely on key performers like Akiteng, Janet Mbabazi, and Esther Illoku, while also expecting improved batting displays to ensure the team continues its winning run.
Meanwhile, Uganda’s bowling attack, which has been their biggest strength so far, will once again be crucial in keeping their opponents at bay.
A win against Hong Kong on Wednesday will push Uganda closer to securing a spot in the final, but with every team still in contention, the battle for the top two spots remains intense.
