Uganda’s women’s cricket team, the Victoria Pearls, are basking in glory after clinching the Women’s Day T20 Cup with a commanding 8-wicket victory over Namibia in the final at Entebbe Cricket Oval.
The win not only cemented their dominance in the tournament but also marked a fitting end to an impressive campaign.
Namibia, opting to bat first after winning the toss, suffered an early collapse, losing their captain Suné Wittmann in the first over.
Their struggles continued as Uganda’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Janet Mbabazi, tore through the batting lineup. Namibia found themselves reeling at 30/6 after 10 overs, with only Wilka Mwatiles (22) and Mekelaye (23) managing to put up some resistance.
Mbabazi, Uganda’s captain, delivered a stellar performance with the ball, taking 4 wickets for 19 runs in just 3 overs, limiting Namibia to 71/9 in 20 overs.
In response, Uganda’s chase got off to a rocky start as Mbabazi fell for a golden duck, but the team recovered swiftly. Iloku Esther steadied the innings with 17 runs, while Immaculate Nakisuyi took charge with a composed, unbeaten 30, guiding Uganda to victory in 12.3 overs.
Her contributions in both batting and fielding, including two crucial catches, earned her the Player of the Match award.
The Victoria Pearls’ journey to the title was marked by resilience and consistency. They began with a dominant 8-wicket victory over Hong Kong China before suffering a heartbreaking 1-wicket loss to Nepal.
However, Uganda bounced back with narrow wins, including a dramatic 1-run victory over Namibia and a 4-wicket win against Hong Kong.
A crushing 40-run revenge victory over Nepal in the second round and a 74-run demolition of Namibia in their final group match sealed their place in the championship showdown.
Their triumph in the final was particularly significant as it marked the first time Uganda defeated Namibia in the tournament, proving their growth and superiority when it mattered most.
