Novak Djokovic has stamped his authority on the Miami Open, not only securing a spot in the last 16, but also claiming a historic milestone.
The Serbian tennis legend defeated Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli in a compelling match, with scores of 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).
This victory propelled Djokovic to a record-breaking 411th ATP Masters 1000 win, surpassing his long-time rival, Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic started strong, swiftly taking the first set. However, Ugo Carabelli, despite being ranked lower, showed remarkable resilience in the second set, pushing the world number one to a tie-break. Djokovic, however, demonstrated his championship pedigree, dominating the tie-break to clinch the match.
“It’s an honor,” Djokovic said in a post-match interview. “These milestones mean a lot, and I’m grateful for every victory.”
The 37-year-old, who is aiming for his seventh Miami Open title, will now face Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the next round.
Musetti secured his place with a victory over Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime.
The Miami Open has also seen some surprising results. Stefanos Tsitsipas, a highly seeded player, was knocked out by American Sebastian Korda.
Additionally, Grigor Dimitrov overcame Karen Khachanov in a tense three-set match.
Djokovic’s record-breaking win adds another chapter to his illustrious career, and all eyes will be on him as he continues his quest for another title in Miami.
