Red Bull Promotes Yuki Tsunoda to Replace Liam Lawson

Red Bull Racing has announced a significant driver change, promoting Yuki Tsunoda to replace Liam Lawson with immediate effect.

Tsunoda, 24, will partner Max Verstappen at the senior team starting from the Japanese Grand Prix on April 4-6, while Lawson returns to Racing Bulls alongside rookie Isack Hadjar.

The decision follows Lawson’s challenging start to the 2025 Formula 1 season, where he struggled with the RB21 car and failed to score points in the first two races.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner explained, “It has been difficult to see Liam struggle with the RB21 at the first two races, and as a result, we have collectively taken the decision to make an early switch.”

Red Bull, currently third in the constructors’ championship, aims to regain competitiveness after a dip in performance last season. Verstappen, despite his skill, has expressed concerns about the car’s balance issues, which have hindered its pace.

Tsunoda’s promotion marks a pivotal moment in his career, offering him an opportunity to prove his potential at the senior team. His debut will take place at Suzuka, a track owned by Honda, Red Bull’s engine partner and a long-time supporter of Tsunoda’s career.

For Lawson, the demotion is seen as a chance to rebuild his confidence and career in a familiar environment. Red Bull’s swift decision reflects their reputation for handling their young driver program with a mix of ambition and ruthlessness.
