Uganda’s chances of qualifying for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup suffered a fatal blow after a 67-run defeat to Namibia via the DLS method at the UNILAG Cricket Pitch in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Baby Cricket Cranes struggled with both bat and ball, failing to chase a revised target of 189 and getting bowled out for just 68 in 23.5 overs.
Namibia, batting first in a rain-affected match, put up 135/3 in 36 overs, with Tiaan Van Der Merwe leading the charge with a well-crafted 53, while Francois Du Plessis added an unbeaten 35.
Uganda’s bowling unit, led by Sohera Richard’s tight 10-over spell, showed some resistance but couldn’t prevent Namibia from posting a competitive total.
Chasing 189 after the DLS adjustment, Uganda’s batting lineup crumbled under Namibia’s relentless attack.
Nyiiro Jonathan (16) and Ocen Peter (12*) were the only batters to reach double figures, as Namibia’s bowlers, led by Max Heingo (3/20), dismantled the chase with ease.
Du Plessis further stamped his authority with two wickets, earning himself the Player of the Match award for his all-round contribution.
With this loss—Uganda’s third in the tournament—their hopes of securing a World Cup spot are all but over.
The team will now look to salvage pride in their final match against hosts Nigeria who haven’t won any game in the qualifiers. The game will take place on April 6th.
