McLaren’s Oscar Piastri secured pole position for the Bahrain Grand Prix, outpacing Mercedes’ George Russell by 0.168 seconds. Charles Leclerc, driving for Ferrari, claimed third place on the grid ahead of Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Piastri’s McLaren teammate Lando Norris finished an underwhelming sixth, trailing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who is just one point behind him in the championship standings. Pierre Gasly impressed in the Alpine, securing fifth, while Williams’ Carlos Sainz took eighth, with Yuki Tsunoda in the second Red Bull completing the top 10.
McLaren had been favored to dominate qualifying, but expectations for a Piastri-Norris showdown dissolved when Norris struggled on his final lap. Piastri reflected on his stellar performance, saying, “I felt confident all weekend… I got the lap time when it mattered. Can’t thank the team enough for the car they’ve given me.”
Norris, 0.426 seconds off his teammate’s time, admitted frustration over his lack of pace. “I was just slow… The car is amazing. I have nothing to complain about, the team are doing an amazing job but I am just letting them down,” he said.
Elsewhere, Lewis Hamilton, ninth in his Ferrari, echoed Norris’ sentiments, apologizing for his own underperformance. “Our car is clearly a lot better than what I am delivering with it,” Hamilton said, praising teammate Leclerc’s efforts.
Defending champion Max Verstappen, who qualified seventh, revealed struggles with braking and grip. “It was tough all weekend… It’s something we need to investigate,” he explained.
For Russell, qualifying exceeded expectations as he closely trailed McLaren and outpaced Norris. “Q1 and Q2 were a real challenge, but Q3 I got back into my rhythm… A great place to be for tomorrow,” the Mercedes driver remarked.
