Denmark’s Holger Rune delivered a breathtaking performance to defeat home favorite Carlos Alcaraz and capture the Barcelona Open crown.
Rune, showcasing composure and precision in key moments, outplayed his childhood friend 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 to secure his first ATP Tour title in two years and his biggest win since the 2022 Paris Masters.
Inspired by Novak Djokovic’s tactical approach against Alcaraz in the Olympic final, Rune executed a strategy focused on resilience and pressure.
Reflecting on his victory, the 21-year-old said, “I thought to myself, let’s try to play that kind of style, really make him play a lot of balls. I’m really happy about how I stayed composed when it mattered.”
The first set unfolded as a high-quality duel, with Alcaraz breaking first before Rune responded immediately to level the contest.
Both players displayed their aggressive baseline prowess, but Rune’s superiority at the net proved pivotal, winning 12 of 16 points in that area. Despite fending off four set points, Alcaraz’s long forehand in the tie-break handed Rune the edge.
In the second set, Alcaraz missed crucial opportunities, including two break points in Rune’s opening service game, and required a medical timeout at 2-1.
Rune capitalized on the Spaniard’s struggles, reeling off five consecutive games to seal the victory, committing 24 unforced errors compared to Alcaraz’s 33.
Rune’s triumph will return him to the top 10 in the rankings, while Alcaraz’s loss means he will be replaced as world number two by Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who claimed the Munich Open title on his 28th birthday.
Both Rune and Alcaraz are slated to compete in the upcoming Madrid Masters, promising further excitement in their rivalry.
Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles final, Britain’s Luke Johnson and Dutch partner Sander Arends triumphed in a three-set thriller to defeat Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski.
