World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Madrid Open due to a thigh injury sustained during his Barcelona Open final loss to Holger Rune.
“Things didn’t work out as I wanted,” Alcaraz said, explaining the decision to avoid further risk to his French Open preparations.
The two-time Madrid champion had not trained all week after arriving on Monday.
While ruling out Madrid, the 21-year-old is optimistic about competing at the Italian Open and is “sure” he will be fit for Roland Garros, which starts on May 25th.
He will undergo further tests next week to assess his recovery.
