Australian tennis star and two-time Grand Slam doubles champion Max Purcell has accepted an 18-month ban for breaching anti-doping rules.
He admitted to receiving excessive intravenous vitamin infusions in December 2023, exceeding the 100ml limit within 12 hours.
While not testing positive for a banned substance, the “use of a prohibited method” led to the sanction.
Purcell, provisionally suspended in December 2024, cooperated fully with the ITIA investigation, resulting in a reduced ban ending June 11, 2026.
He will also forfeit results and prize money from mid-December 2023 to early February 2024.
Purcell expressed relief that the “seriously affecting” case was over, detailing the negative impact on his well-being.
The ITIA emphasized that anti-doping rules extend beyond positive drug tests, aiming to ensure a level playing field. This follows recent bans for Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner in the sport.
